Joaquin Phoenix rumoured for 'Lincoln'

Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly been approached to star in 20th Century Fox's action movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

According to Deadline, Walk The Line star Phoenix is the first choice to play Henry Sturgess, a man who saves the teenage Lincoln from vampires and teaches him how to slay the bloodsuckers.

Benjamin Walker was last week named as the star for the big budget project.

Timur Bekmambetov will direct Vampire Hunter, while Tim Burton is producing.

Phoenix last appeared in Casey Affleck's film I'm Still Here, which documented the actor's retirement from Hollywood. Phoenix and Affleck both maintained that the movie was genuine during production, only to confirm it was a hoax shortly after release last year.

Stewart, Agron linked to Lois Lane role

Kristen Stewart and Glee star Dianna Agron are reportedly in the running to play Lois Lane in the new Superman movie.

According to What's Playing, Rachel McAdams, Jessica Biel and Malin Akerman, the star of Superman director Zack Snyder's Watchmen, are also in contention to play Clark Kent's Daily Planet colleague and love interest.

A source claimed that Stewart is unlikely to sign up for the superhero picture because she has "too many other juicy offers", while Agron has been "getting in the door" to audition for several high-profile movies.

Anne Hathaway has allegedly been removed from the Lois Lane shortlist after winning the role of Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

Margot Kidder, Teri Hatcher, Erica Durance and Kate Bosworth have previously portrayed Lois Lane on screen.

Henry Cavill will play the title role in Superman, due out in cinemas in December 2012.

Howard Marks: 'I have no regrets'

Howard Marks has claimed that he does not regret anything he did as a drugs smuggler.

The Mr Nice author told Metro that the positives of his past life more than made up for the negatives.

Marks said: "It was well worth it. The gains to me personally outweighed the losses."

When his years in prison away from his family were raised, he added: "Yes, even given all of that stuff. It did get stressful. I don't want to underestimate the suffering but there's suffering in everyone's life. None of us get an easy ride."

Asked if he had any regrets about things he did, Marks replied: "No. If you regret something then you want to turn the clock back and change something and I don't feel that."

Nolan shoots down Ledger Joker rumours

Christopher Nolan has dismissed recent rumours that unseen footage of Heath Ledger is to feature in The Dark Knight Rises.

A New Zealand website had alleged that the director was considering whether to include unused scenes from Ledger's turn as The Joker from The Dark Knight in the new Batman film.

However, Nolan and producer wife Emma Thomas shot down the reports at an awards season party for their Oscar contender Inception

Thomas told The Hollywood Reporter: "I heard the rumour. We're not doing that."

The couple again denied that Ledger would appear in the film at all and expressed a desire for his performance as the manic villain to remain confined to the 2008 film.

Nolan recently reiterated that The Dark Knight Rises will be his last Batman picture.

Christopher Nolan has confirmed that The Dark Knight Rises will be his last Batman film.

The upcoming movie will bring an end to the trilogy of Christian Bale-starring films helmed by the Inception director.

"I must say that I'm glad - I'm very, very glad - to be embarking on the last chapter of our Batman saga without any sense of obligation or duty to the studio," Nolan told Entertainment Weekly.

"They did very well with Inception. So I'm able to go into finishing our story in a very enthusiastic way."

He added: "I feel very glad that I'm doing another Batman film. I think it would have been daunting to sit down and write an original script after Inception.

"I love working within the realm and rules of our Batman world. It's kind of nice to have someplace to go that I'm super-excited about."

The Warner Bros and DC Entertainment movie is due for release in summer 2012.

Hilary Swank 'struggles to gain weight'

Hilary Swank has revealed that she struggles to gain weight.

The actress was required to put on 15lbs for her role in the drama Conviction but admitted that she had to more than double her caloric intake and stop working out to achieve the task.

"I personally have difficulty keeping weight on, and for this role I had to add 15lbs. My character, a single mum, hadn't any opportunity to stay fit," she explained to the New York Post.

"For my own needs, I like working out. But to gain weight I stopped that. Besides, this was an independent film. Small budget. We filmed long hours, long days. No time to work out."

Swank added: "Normally I only eat until I'm full. On this shoot, I kept eating more. Even when I was full, I'd eat more. With nowhere to go, the weight stays on you."

Bonham Carter: 'Parenting lessons help'

Helena Bonham Carter has admitted that she has been having parental lessons as she is struggling to juggle her career with family life.

The actress said that her children have been appreciating her new skills.

Bonham Carter, who raises 7-year-old son Billy and 2-year-old daughter Nell with her partner Tim Burton, told the Los Angeles Times: "You give them positive attention and then they start to crave it.

"It absolutely works. Billy is lapping it up. And as a parent, you become happier because you're observing all these good things about your child."

The 44-year-old, who plays evil witch Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter films, also revealed that children are "terrified" of her on-screen character.

She explained: "The young kids recognise me, and they are terrified, genuinely terrified, but also drawn toward you. The little girls feel ambivalent too; they kind of love her, and they like dressing up as her and, believe me, it's honestly fun to wear the costume.

"I made her childlike deliberately so kids could relate to her as the ultimate naughty one. And there is fun in being naughty. She is a total version of age 3. There's no parenting class on handling that one."

'A Christmas Story' actor producing musical

A Christmas Story star Peter Billingsley has signed to produce a new musical based on the 1983 film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Billingsley has boarded the project as executive producer.

Billingsley, who portrayed Ralphie Parker in the original film when he was 12 years old, said that the movie means a lot to him.

"I’m excited to bring this film to the stage because the story and the characters lend themselves so well to the world of musicals," the actor said.

He added: "I am honoured to be a part of this project and look forward to bringing the play to more stages. Just think about the idea of a leg-lamp kickline."

Previews of the show are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. A Christmas Story: The Musical! will run from December 9 to December 30.

Duvall receives career achievement honour

Robert Duvall is to be honoured at the upcoming 22nd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival's Awards Gala.

The veteran actor will receive the 'Career Achievement' award at the January event, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Oscar winner Duvall has starred in a number of classic films, including The Godfather, The Conversation and Network.

The Get Low star has also directed four films, including The Apostle and Assassination Tango.

"For nearly 50 years, Robert Duvall has transfixed cinematic audiences with his gritty, intuitive performances," said festival chairman Harold Matzner.

Matzner further praised Duvall's latest performance in Get Low.

He added: "In Get Low, his most recent role, Duvall portrays a backwoodsman who stages his own funeral while still alive. Duvall gives a virtuoso performance, challenging audiences to understand his character who is caught between myth and reality."

The 79-year-old will join Natalie Portman, Javier Bardem, Colin Firth, Jennifer Lawrence and Carey Mulligan as honorers during the festival, which kicks off on January 8 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

"Justin and I have quite a few unclothed moments. But he made it easy for me by kidding around and keeping me laughing."

Paul Dano has been linked to a part in Rian Johnson's upcoming sci-fi thriller Looper.

According to Variety, the Little Miss Sunshine actor is in talks to star in the film, while The Playlist reports that Dano is being lined up to play Seth, a hitman.

Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt are already attached to the project. Looper is said to be about a crime syndicate which sends intended victims back in time to be killed without a trace.

Production on the film is to start early next year in Louisiana.

Exec wants full cast for 'American Pie 4'

American Pie producer Craig Perry has revealed that he is hopeful of bringing back the original cast for the fourth film in the series, despite it being seven years since the release of American Pie: The Wedding.

Speaking to Comingsoon.net, Perry also said that he was aware scheduling could be a major issue.

"A lot of it has to do with scheduling of the actors because they're all busy. Alyson [Hannigan's] got the show [How I Met Your Mother] and the baby, so she's got plenty on her plate," he stated. "I think if we get a script - which I think we will - that everybody is excited about, then it's going to be about the schedule, because it's going to be really hard to get that gang back together."

On which characters could be returning, given that not all of them were involved in The Wedding, Perry added: "For me, it makes sense to bring everybody back, because at a certain point, if you start winding it down, it isn't what it's meant to be. I feel like those characters have become part of the cultural lexicon. You kind of know who they are, and I think there's an interest in seeing where they are, because they haven't been on screen for seven years."

R.I.P: Leslie Nielsen dies, aged 84

Leslie Nielsen has died at the age of 84.

The comic actor, best known for his roles in Airplane! and The Naked Gun, passed away at a hospital near his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where he was being treated for pneumonia.

Nielsen's nephew Doug announced the news on Canadian radio station CJOB, saying: "Just in this last 48 hours, the infection has gotten too much and today at 5.30am, with his friends and his wife by his side, he just fell asleep and passed away."

Nielsen's agent John S. Kelly later confirmed the news.

The actor, born in Saskatchewan, served in the Royal Canadian Air Force before making his debut on US television in the late '50s, and eventually appearing in a string of hit comedy films in the '80s and '90s.

'Star Wars' director Kershner dies at 87

American film director Irvin Kershner has died at the age of 87.

Kershner was best known as the director of second Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back.

According to Yahoo News, Kershner's goddaughter Adriana Santini confirmed his death earlier today following his long illness.

As well as directing the most popular instalment in the long-running science fiction series, Kershner also helmed Robocop 2 and unofficial James Bond film Never Say Never Again.

Despite his advanced years, Kershner was still working on a number of film projects at the time of his death.

Colin Farrell has said that he was drawn to the conflicted loyalties of his London Boulevard character Mitchell.

In an interview with The AP, the actor explained that the reluctant gangster Mitchell is seemingly being chased by his troubled past.

"He has high ideals and he has a depth of experience that comes between him and those ideals. The life that he left behind, he didn't really leave behind," he remarked. "He walked away from it, but it's followed him and haunts him through this story."

Farrell also suggested that the gritty crime drama is not simply representative of the London underworld, but also of the struggles that every major city endures.

"You could move this film to Dublin, change the accents, and it would be an honest representation of a certain aspect of life in Dublin. And, I think most cities," the star said.

Jessica Alba 'considered quitting acting'

Jessica Alba has admitted that she almost gave up her acting career after being criticised by Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer director Tim Story.

In an interview with Elle magazine, Alba revealed that she reacted badly when the filmmaker chided her performance during a highly emotional scene.

"[The director told me] 'It looks too real. It looks too painful. Can you be prettier when you cry? Cry pretty, Jessica.' He was like, 'Don't do that thing with your face. Just make it flat. We can CGI the tears in.'" she said.

The star continued: "I'm like, 'but there's no connection to a human being'. And then it all got me thinking: 'Am I not good enough? Are my instincts and my emotions not good enough? Do people hate them so much that they don't want me to be a person? Am I not allowed to be a person in my work?' And so I just said, 'F**k it - I don't care about this business anymore.'"

The actress also suggested that some of her films have not succeeded at the box office because she has often worked with "first-time directors".

Mark Wahlberg eager to make 'Broken City'

The Brian Tucker-penned script centres on a private detective who gets drawn into New York City's corrupt mayoral race. Broken City appeared on the 2008 'Black List', an annual compendium of the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood.

Speaking to MTV about the project, Wahlberg - who will play lead character Billy Taggart - called it an "amazing piece of material".

"Broken City I want to do at the end of next year with Allen Hughes directing," he said. "[It's] on the Black List. It's one of the best unproduced screenplays - an amazing piece of material that should attract amazing talent."

Wahlberg compared the movie to Roman Polanski's crime classic Chinatown and LA Confidential.

"You have to embrace the totality of his evilness," the actor said. "He's like the devil."

Men In Black III Adds Jeff Nathanson

Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can) has come aboard Men in Black III for some rewrites, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The film, which begins shooting tomorrow in New York City, has also confirmed its unconventional shooting schedule which will shoot through Christmas before going on hiatus until February at which point production will resume.

The sequel, which is said to feature Agent J (Will Smith) traveling back in time and teaming with a younger Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones in the present day scenes and Josh Brolin in the ones set in the past), also stars Jemaine Clement, Emma Thompson, Alec Baldwin and Nicole Scherzinger.

The 3D release is planned for release on May 25, 2012.

Caine, Isaacs among 'Cars 2' voice cast

Sir Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer and Jason Isaacs will lend their voices to Pixar's upcoming Cars 2.

The British actors will also be joined by Joe Mantegna, Peter Jacobson and Thomas Kretschmann in the 3D animated sequel, which sees sports car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) take part in the World Grand Prix.

"The story of Cars 2 was sparked by the idea of taking Lightning McQueen and Mater overseas," said director John Lasseter. "Lighting McQueen is invited to compete in the World Grand Prix to race against the fastest cars in the world in three fantastic locations: Japan, Italy and the UK.

"Of course Mater, who has never left Radiator Springs, is completely out of place in these iconic international cultures, which leads to hilarious comedic moments."

He continued: "The World Grand Prix is just the setting for our real story: Mater is unknowingly embroiled in a case of international espionage! Cars 2 is also a full-on spy movie with state-of-the-art gadgets, thrilling action and a cast of new and exciting characters like British agents Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell, and great car villains. It's totally different and so much fun."

Caine and Mortimer will voice Finn and Holley respectively, while Mantegna is Grem, Jacobson Acer and Kretschmann Professor Z.

"I started movies playing Harry Palmer in The Ipcress File,” Caine commented. “Now as a grandfather, I have become Finn McMissile in Cars 2 - another spy in a great series - it's wonderful for my grandchildren and me."

Bonnie Hunt, Tony Shalhoub and Cheech Marin will reprise their roles from 2006's Cars.

Bale 'doesn't like discussing filmmaking'

Christian Bale has admitted that he does not like to discuss the process of making movies.

Speaking to Esquire, the Dark Knight star lamented that being so open about the process of constructing films can demystify the entertainment industry.

"Everybody talks about the process too much," he said. "The interesting thing about a movie is the movie."

Bale further remarked that he believes that a film should speak for itself without having to be explained to audiences.

"I don't get it when you get so much openness about the way movies are made, and the special effects and the behind-the-scenes stuff and all of that. I can't help but feel like this reduces it a little bit.

"It's something that shouldn't just be handed out as an extra on a DVD. It should be sought out by serious potential filmmakers who wanna learn how to do it."

Bonham Carter to receive British film award

Radcliffe: 'I'll always be Harry Potter'

Speaking to Parade, Radcliffe acknowledged that it may difficult for audiences to accept him in new roles now that the Potter series is coming to a close.

Tom Ford has revealed details about his follow-up to this year's A Single Man.

The fashion designer-turned-director told Vogue that he is planning to next make a comedy film.

"The movie was catharsis. That was my homo-angst movie," Ford said of drama A Single Man, which won star Colin Firth a 'Best Actor' Oscar nomination. "Now I'm shooting another. I'm writing the script - a comedy. I'm in the mood to have fun and smile."

Ford last year said his second feature film will be "very different" from his debut and won't be based on a novel or existing work. A Single Man was adapted from the book by Christopher Isherwood.

Amazon launches Amazon Studios

Amazon.com will help aspiring screenwriters and filmmakers through its new online venture Amazon Studios.

The business is inviting talent to submit their scripts or full-length 'test movies' to win funding to get their film made. Amazon Studios will be offering a total of $2.7 million to the top submissions received by December 31, 2011 and will develop them as feature-length productions.

Warner Bros has a first-look agreement with Amazon on the project. Clips from test movies Original Soldiers and Zoe have already been released to demonstrate the type of submissions Amazon Studios are looking for.

Amazon's director of digital product development Roy Price said: "We are excited to introduce writers, filmmakers and movie lovers to Amazon Studios. Full-length test movies will show stories up on their feet and attract helpful feedback at an early stage. We hope that Amazon Studios will help filmmakers experiment and collaborate and we look forward to developing hit movies."

Writers with successful submissions will receive $200,000 and a $400,000 bonus if the produced movie makes more than $60 million at the US box office.

The Amazon Studios industry panel includes writers Jack Epps Jr. (Top Gun, Dick Tracy), Mike Werb (Face/Off) and producers Mark Gill and Michael Taylor.

"Amazon Studios is a great idea. Getting feedback is essential for creative artists to improve their work," said Epps. "By letting anyone submit a movie or screenplay to be considered for a major motion picture, Amazon Studios is really opening the doors to Hollywood."

Zemeckis targets 'Wizard Of Oz' remake

Robert Zemeckis has entered talks to direct a Wizard Of Oz remake for Warner Bros.

The studio owns the rights to the Technicolor classic and is planning to use the original's script for a new live-action version, reports Deadline.

Judy Garland starred in the 1939 big screen adaptation, which featured an Oscar-winning soundtrack including 'Over The Rainbow' and 'We're Off to See the Wizard'.

Disney is also mounting a new version of the story, titled The Great And Powerful Oz, with Spider-Man director Sam Raimi at the helm. Robert Downey Jr. is attached to star in the rival project.

Forrest Gump director Zemeckis's next movie will be a performance-capture Yellow Submarine remake for Disney, due for release in 2012.

Based on Arthur Herzog's novel, the 1978 original starred Michael Caine as an entomologist who learns that killer bees from South America are forming into huge swarms. Katherine Ross, Richard Chamberlain, Olivia de Havilland and Henry Fonda were among the supporting cast.

The Swarm flopped on its initial release, taking in $10 million on a budget of $21 million, and Caine later dubbed it the worst film he has ever made.

Warner Bros has confirmed that it is "vigorously investigating" the leaking of the first 36 minutes of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part One.

Various sources report that the apparently watermarked footage from the film appeared on download sites in the last 48 hours.

"Last night, a portion of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part One was stolen and illegally posted on the internet," an official statement said. "This constitutes a serious breach of copyright violation and theft of Warner Bros property.

"We are working actively to restrict and/or remove copies that may be available."

It continued: "Also, we are vigorously investigating this matter and will prosecute those involved to the full extent of the law."

The full 146-minute movie has not leaked ahead of its general release on Friday.

Kirsten Dunst supports 'Spider-Man' reboot

Kirsten Dunst has admitted that she has no hard feelings about the decision to reboot the Spider-Man franchise.

Earlier this year, Sony Pictures announced that it was to relaunch the superhero series without Mary Jane Watson actress Dunst, lead actor Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi.

Dunst told Screen Junkies that she was proud of her time on the films and that she does not begrudge handing the franchise over to Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

"I felt like what we had during those films was so special, like me and Tobey and Sam," she said. "It was such a unique experience and also because it was these independent minds and actors and you're making this huge film.

"It's great that all these kids are such huge fans and to be a part of a movie like that is very special, especially a good franchise. So to end on Spider-Man 3 I think is the perfect way to leave it.

"I like Andrew Garfield so much as an actor - and Emma Stone - so I think they'll be great in the new version."

Dunst went on to speculate why Sony decided to reboot the series with a new cast, commenting: "I feel like it was time, you know. Sometimes they always want to push things for money reasons or whatever and it just didn't come together the way they probably had wanted or envisioned."

When asked if she would be watching the new instalment, Dunst replied: "Of course I'm going to see the movie! Of course."

Amanda Seyfried has promised that the upcoming film adaptation of Red Riding Hood will be "edgy" and "dark".

The actress - who plays the title role - praised director Catherine Hardwicke's vision in bringing the classic story to life.

"Red Riding Hood is a classic fairy tale that we all know, and what fans can expect from this version of the story is that it's basically just a jumping-off point," she told MTV's The Seven.

"Catherine Hardwicke has just completely turned this story into something edgy and gothic and dark, and she's clearly somebody that's very capable of turning something, everything into an extraordinary world, as we've seen before."

She continued: "And also there's a romance aspect to the film, which isn't in the fairy tale... a lot of romance and a lot of danger. There's a wolf at the centre of the story, and it's exciting 'cause it's a whodunit."

Seyfried also insisted that fans will be surprised by the "scarier" side of the story.

"Fans will be surprised by the tone of the film. Catherine just completely throws it into this dark world, and it's a little scarier than it was meant to be when it was written," she explained.

"We had this freedom to go far with it, so whatever preconceptions the audience has, they should throw it out the door."

Emma Watson has revealed that she considered quitting the Harry Potter franchise to focus on her studies.

The 20-year-old actress, who has been studying at Brown University since last year, told MTV News that the issue of whether she could juggle her career and her education almost forced her to leave her role as Hermione Granger in the wizard series.

Watson explained that her contract renewal was discussed in 2006 while filming The Order Of The Phoenix, and it became apparent that filming The Half-Blood Prince could present difficulties.

It's been really insane, so it's a more fun workout than running on a treadmill."

Speaking to The Sunday Mirror, Caine said that by the 1990s he had grown tired of his profession and considered no longer accepting acting roles.

Coroner staff 'copied Jackson death cert'

The Los Angeles Coroner's Office has claimed that at least half a dozen staff members have been found to have improperly accessed Michael Jackson's death certificate.

Officials have said that the document was viewed more than 300 times within two weeks of the singer's death, with some employees appearing to have printed copies before it was made public.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, chief coroner investigator Craig Harvey said: "There's only one person in the investigation of Mr Jackson who needed to have a copy of the death certificate, and that was the investigator."

He went on to say that accessing the Electronic Death Registration System for personal use was "not appropriate" but that he had not contacted any law enforcement agency because it was only internal rules that had been broken.

It is understood that a coroner's captain later issued an email to all staff warning that any further improper views of the certificate could result in disciplinary action.

A trilogy of movies about the life of Bruce Lee are reportedly in the works.

The late Enter The Dragon star's family has teamed up with JA Media to make Bruce Lee, casting Tony Leung Ka-fai as the actor's father.

A director has yet to be revealed, although Variety claims that Zhang Yimou (House Of Flying Daggers) has repeatedly shown an interest in bringing Lee's story to the big screen.

The proposed movies have the support of Lee's brother Robert and sister Phoebe, with the pair appearing at a Beijing press conference to announce the project on Monday.

"We've read many books and seen many movies about Bruce Lee, but there are many inaccuracies in them," Robert commented.

Lee died 36 years ago this week from a cerebral edema caused by a reaction to prescription painkillers.

The Hollywood Reporter has published an interesting article on the film projects that DC Comics has in the works. They mention previously-reported titles The Losers, Jonah Jex, The Green Lantern, and Red, but there's more on others we haven't heard much about lately. Here's a few excerpts:

This past fall, Warners quietly hired three of DC's biggest writers -- Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman -- to act as consultants and writers for its superhero line of movies. The move involved taking back the reins on projects being handled by such producers as Charles Roven ("The Flash") and Akiva Goldsman ("Teen Titans").

The moves have begun to pay off. Johns worked up a new treatment for a "Flash" script, being written by Dan Mazeau; Johns will act in a producer capacity on the project, which has not attached a director.

The projects Morrison and Wolfman are working on are in the early stages at Warners, whose execs declined to comment.

The studio is taking pitches on sci-fi hero Adam Strange and the underwater-breathing hero "Aquaman," to be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way shingle.

Also in the pipeline: "Bizarro Superman" being written by "Galaxy Quest" scribes David Howard and Robert Gordon; a sequel to "Constantine," with Goldsman and Erwin Stoff producing; two concurrent Green Arrow projects, an origin story and a prison-set one titled "Super Max"; and "Shazam," which was set up at New Line but has moved to Warners, with Pete Segal attached to direct.

They also mention a Superman Returns sequel, a third Batman film from Christopher Nolan and the Justice League movie, but there's no real news there.

Nicolas Cage is circling the villain role in comic book adventure The Green Hornet.

According to Variety, the Knowing star is in early talks to portray a gangster who goes up against Seth Rogen's masked crimefighter.

It has also been confirmed that Cameron Diaz is in discussions to play the love interest, a reporter who works for the newspaper owned by the Hornet's alter ego Britt Reid.

The superhero film, which Columbia Pictures has scheduled for a July 9, 2010 release, will be directed by Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind) from a script by Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Johns to produce 'Flash' movie

Geoff Johns has been unveiled as writer and producer for the upcoming movie based on DC superhero the Flash.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros has recruited the current Green Lantern scribe to work alongside writer Dan Mazeau, as well as Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman, who have been hired as consultants.

The cinematic adaptation is expected to detail the origin story of the hero, following teenager Wally West as he is gifted superhuman speed after being struck by a bolt of lightening.

David Dobkin is attached to direct the film, with Warners targeting a 2011 release.

Several other DC IPs are expected to follow the Flash onto the big screen, with Green Lantern currently in pre-production and Aquaman, Green Arrow and Bizzaro Superman all in planning stages.

'Knight' producer acquires 'Voltron' rights

Atlas Entertainment has acquired the rights to bring Voltron to the big screen.

Along with his film company partners, Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is to bring a live-action version of the Japanese anime series to cinemas after the project was dropped by 20th Century Fox last year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie will be based on the '80s children’s programme in which five robot lions formed together as one gigantic super entity known as Voltron. The show also spawned a popular line of toys during its run and has reportedly remained popular with 'fanboys' ever since it went off the air.

"It's undeniably impressive that Voltron has sustained itself globally for a quarter of a century," Roven said.

Atlas Entertainment has an overall deal with Warner Brothers, while it is understood that the project will utilise CGI technology in the tradition of recent box office champ Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen.

Crowe in 'Commander' sequel talks

Russell Crowe has confirmed that he is in early talks about returning for a Master & Commander sequel.

The actor claimed that he is in negotiations about reprising his role as British sea captain Jack Aubrey during an interview at the Ashes test match at Lords cricket ground, London.

Crowe told The AP that there is "still a long way to go" with the project but it is one of several currently under his consideration.

Master & Commander, which was based on three novels from Patrick O'Brien's 20 book series, was released in 2003 and earned ten Oscar nominations.

A script based on O'Brien's 1986 book The Reverse Of The Medal has reportedly been completed. The story follows Aubrey in the Caribbean on HMS Surprise, where he meets his illegitimate son Samuel Panda.

Cast members from the original film are apparently already signed up for two sequels.

'Potter' to become top film franchise?

The Harry Potter films are expected to become the top-grossing franchise in movie history.

The sixth instalment, due out in UK cinemas on July 17, could push the series over the $5 billion mark in global box office and would place it ahead of the James Bond catalogue to become the highest earner ever, Variety reports.

The first five movies in the wizard saga have grossed $4.48 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will open in 4,300 domestic cinemas and in every major market internationally in 64 territories.

US online ticket service Fandango reported that the latest instalment, which opened in the States today, is the fastest-selling picture of the year and the biggest of any Potter title they have tracked via sales.

It was previously revealed that the IMAX release for the new film has been pushed back by two weeks.

Bruckheimer discusses 'Pirates 4' progress

Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that filming on the fourth instalment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is expected to start next year.

Jackson death 'being treated as homicide'

The Los Angeles Police Department has begun treating Michael Jackson's death as a possible homicide, according to TMZ.

The website has alleged that "multiple" sources within the LAPD are reporting that the investigation is being focused on Jackson's former doctor.

Law officials are quoted as saying there is "plenty of powerful evidence" to link Dr Conrad Murray to an anaesthetic called Diprivan, which the star is alleged to have taken.

It is reported that the evidence includes items found in Jackson's rented home, including the painkillers, an IV stand and an oxygen tank.

The celebrity website also claimed that the LAPD had already held "multiple conversations" with the LA County District Attorney's office about the case. An attorney for Murray has reportedly refused to comment on whether his client administered the drug.

'Twilight' director not feeling any pressure

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has admitted that she does not feel any pressure to match the enormous success of the vampire romance.

Speaking to Reuters, the filmmaker claimed that it was "not healthy" to measure her future achievements against the box office hit, which grossed over $300 million worldwide.

"I don't think that's possible [to top it], and I don't think that's a healthy way to think. Twilight was a phenomenon - the stars just aligned on that film," she said.

Originating in Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir's adventure novels, the character is a New Jersey police officer who is sent down for a crime he didn't commit. He fakes his own death in the electric chair and reinvents himself as a vigilante named the Destroyer.

Fred Ward played the character in the 1985 film Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. A TV spinoff was made three years later with Jeffrey Meek starring as Williams.

Charley Parlapanide and Vlas Parlapanide will script the new take on the role, which will be based on the first book in the series and tell the character's genesis story.

Lucas 'left scarred by sex scenes'

Producer Brad Fuller had initially denied the Heley casting reports, saying: “I can absolutely deny [this rumor]. We have not chosen a Freddy Krueger we’re not even negotiating with anyone yet.” Which again proves that you can’t trust anything producers say during the initial casting stages.

After being burned alive by a mob of angry parents, a pre-school gardener/caretaker named Freddy returns for revenge against the children, now 18 years old, that accused him of sexual abuse. But was Freddy a child molester or was he falsely accused? This is the central question and main addition to the film’s plot. The reboot is also supossedly scarier in tone, as the film’s producers have said Freddy doesn’t joke around.

Haley was nominated for an Academy Award for playing a child molester in Little Children, and next plays a crazy mental patient in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Shutter Island. Most readers probably know him as Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Watchmen.

Harold Ramis has confirmed that Bill Murray will join Dan Aykroyd and himself in the upcoming Ghostbusters sequel.

The writer-actor told MTV News that Murray is definitely "in" for Ghostbusters 3, although the pair had not yet discussed the project.

Ramis said: "Gene [Stupnitsky] and Lee [Eisenberg], both of whom I mentored, are now writing the new Ghostbusters.

Paramount readies 'Star Trek' sequel

Paramount has signed up Star Trek team Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to pen a sequel to this summer's sci-fi blockbuster.

Orci and Kurtzman wrote the script for the new movie, while Lindolof is a producer on Star Trek and co-created Lost with director J.J. Abrams.

No deal is in place for Abrams to return to the Trek director's chair, though he is expected to produce the follow-up through his Bad Robot firm.

Speaking to Variety about the sequel, Kurtzman said: "Obviously we discussed ideas, but we are waiting to see how audiences respond next month.

"With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."

Star Trek is released in cinemas on May 8, with the sequel targeted for a summer 2011 debut.

The move would reunite Bettany with director Scott Stewart, for whom he just finished starring in Legion, an upcoming Screen Gems supernatural thriller.

An adaptation of the TokyoPop comic book, Priest is set in a world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampire and follows a warrior priest (Bettany) who turns against the church to track down a murderous band of vampires who have kidnapped his niece.

Cory Goodman (The Brood) wrote the screenplay.

"I knew the moment I saw Stewart's first cut of 'Legion' that Bettany was Priest and so I mentioned it to him immediately," Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper said.

Spider-Man 4 Script Due this Summer

Sam Raimi told SCI FI Wire that David Lindsay-Abaire's script for Spider-Man 4 should be ready by summer.

Raimi said the film has to make the announced May 6, 2011 release date. "We have to make the release date, and on all of these pictures, the 'Spider-Man' films--and I'm sure it's the same as with many of the other bigger-budgeted films--they have release dates far in advance of a screenplay," he said. "So it's about getting it ready the best you can in time for the first day of production. That's what we've always done, and that's what we'll try to do again."

The helmer also told Empire magazine he will have full control over the fourth installment - something he didn't have on the third. "They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually," he said. "But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn't really have creative control, so to speak."

He added that "The best way for me to move forward on films, is that I've got to be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film. I love Spider-Man so much that I'd like to continue telling Spider-Man stories. But only under those circumstances where I think I can honour him."

Poster Revealed for Imagi's Gatchaman

Gatchakan.blog26.fc2.com has posted a photo of a new poster for Imagi Studios' Gatchaman, to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The poster features Joe Asakura, the second-in-command of the superhero ninja team.

"Gatchaman" originated in Japan in the early 1970s as the television series "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman." Aired in the U.S. as "Battle of the Planets" and "G-Force," it soon became a widely popular syndicated TV series.

The film is set in a future world grappling with environmental and technological issues. The story focuses on five reluctant heroes whose remarkable genetic code makes them Earth's only hope of defeating extra-terrestrial invaders.

'Big Love' rules Seyfried out of 'Punch'

Amanda Seyfried has been forced to drop out of starring in Sucker Punch due to her Big Love TV contract.

According to Entertainment Weekly, HBO has refused to release Seyfried from her Big Love agreement to lead the cast of the Zack Snyder action-fantasy. Filming on the new series of the polygamy drama will overlap with Sucker Punch.

Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood and Emma Stone have been tapped to star in the movie, which centres on a young woman called Baby Doll who slips into a fantasy reality to escape the confines of an all-girl insane asylum.

Snyder has yet to cast a replacement for Seyfried.

Goody film to be directed by Nick Love?

A movie about the life of late reality star Jade Goody may be directed by Nick Love, according to The Times.

The filmmaker, whose work includes The Football Factory, The Business and Outlaw, is allegedly the favoured choice of Goody's estate to make a biopic about the ex-Big Brother contestant.

"Her story lends itself to a biographical film," said Goody's friend and trustee Danny Hayward. "She's captured the mood of the nation. We're talking about it, and we welcome approaches. We want it to tap into raising awareness of cervical cancer."

Love's company Vertigo Films (Bronson) said that the director is "very flattered" about the proposal, but may have to decline an offer as he is currently working on completing his new movie The Firm.

Goody passed away on Sunday morning after losing her battle with cervical cancer.

Hathaway signs for Judy Garland biopic

Anne Hathaway has signed up for Weinstein Co's Judy Garland biopic Get Happy.

The project, which currently has no writer or director, is based on Gerald Clarke's biography of the actress and singer. The book detailed Garland's battles with personal and financial problems up to her death in 1969 at the age of 47.

Garland's famous movie credits included The Wizard Of Oz, Meet Me In St Louis and A Star Is Born.

Like Garland, Hathaway began her acting career at a young age in The Princess Diaries franchise. More recently, she was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her role in Rachel Getting Married.

Jackie Chan: 'I don't like Rush Hour'

Jackie Chan has admitted that he is not a fan of his own Rush Hour movies, despite their success at the box office.

The martial arts expert told The Mirror that he hopes to progress as an actor and play less typecast roles in the future.

Chan said: "I don't like the Rush Hour films but the fact is they generated hundreds and hundreds of millions and they're paying us really well.

"The thing is, I can't just make Rush Hour one, two and three and Drunken Master one and two and Police Story one to six. I know I have to change.

"I've wanted to do it for the last few years and I hope people can accept it. I want to play a good guy and a bad guy and would love to be the Asian Robert De Niro or Dustin Hoffman."

He added that his new film, Shinjuku Incident, would be a "big surprise" for viewers who "expect me only to be running around breaking people's arms and fingers".

Chan explained that he makes his "American films for American audiences and Asian films for Asian audiences".

Carrey film "too risqué" for US release

Jim Carrey black comedy I Love You Phillip Morris may not get a US cinema release because it contains an explicit gay sex scene.

Despite securing distribution deals in the UK and Europe, US firms are uneasy with a love scene between Carrey and Ewan McGregor's character Phillip Morris, reports The Times.

"The depiction of the sexual activity was far more than I've ever seen in a mainstream film with a mainstream celebrity," said Lewis Tice, director of publicity and marketing for TLA Releasing. "There's a graphic sex scene in the first 10 minutes that I was surprised to see."

Filmmakers are re-cutting the movie for US distribution companies in an attempt to secure a theatrical release. If no agreement is reached, the movie will go straight to DVD.

"Mostly straight, multiplex-going audiences don't want to see a romantic comedy in which two dudes get it on; unless it is meant as a joke," commented Scott Stiffler, author of Why Hollywood Avoids Gay Movies.

I Love You Phillip Morris focuses on real-life con artist Steven Marshall (Carrey), who falls in love with his cellmate (McGregor).
